As most of you probably know, I recently (a few weeks ago) went to Playa Del Carmen @ Mexico.
While I was there, I got a lot of messages of people who want to go there later this year and they wanted to know what to do.
- 5th street in Playa Del Carmen
This is the main street of the city. 2 km of Mexican bars, cute shops (read : also a lot of touristic trash shops), fancy ‘jungle’ bars,… This place is ideal to visit in the afternoon, then have a drink at the Thompson rooftop bar and have dinner at ‘de Plank’ or ‘Oh lala’.
- Tulum
During our time in Mexico, we stayed in a hotel in Playa Del Carmen. We often visited Tulum; a city located 60 km from Playa Del Carmen. Everytime we visited Tulum we were kinda feeling bad that we didn’t booked a hotel right there. All the hotels, restaurants and bars are really Pinterest-worthy; eco-friendly hotels, vegan restaurants, fancy bars with swings as chairs, …
And the beach in Tulum… It’s the prettiest I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen a lot of them, believe me. If you guys want I can also write a blogpost about a few hotspots in Tulum.
I would recommend you to chill at Ziggy Beach.
- Chitchen Itza
Even tough this place is super touristic, it is a MUST-do! Chitchen Itza is 1 of the 7 wonders of the world. I would really recommend you to visit this place with a guide. I know you might feel ridiculous in such a big group, following the leader with an umbrella, but these guides know a loooot about the history and will tell you some very interesting stuff.
- Sian Ka’an
Sain Ka’an is a biosphere reserve located in the municipality of Tulum in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It was established in 1986 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
If you go to Sian Ka’an you just have to join a organized boot tour. The guides will show you the prettiest spots and will show you some awesome wildlife. Don’t forget to bring your camera!
- Puerto Morelos
Puerto Morelos is a town and seaport located 35 km from Playa del Carmen. I think this little town is a must-do, because it is a very quiet and relax place with a lot of lovely beach bars and restaurants. I would really recommend you to have dinner at ‘Al Chimichurri’, this restaurant serves really really good quality food and the waiters are so polite.

Another fun and pretty restaurant is ‘La Cueva del Chango’, literally translated “the monkey bar”.
If you’re lucky you will see monkeys swinging by while eating the most delicious Mexican dishes.
The restaurant itself is a really pretty place, it feels like you’re eating in the middle of a monkeyjungle.
When you’re seated they will ask you if you want to taste a Concha, this is a Mexican sugar bread and it is sooo delicious. So definitely say yes if they ask you.
The restaurant is located at the end of 5th street, you won’t need to take a long walk to get there. ?
Also something worth to visit is the theme park Xcaret, in the evening they present you a show where they show the history of the Mayas and the Aztecs.
It is really beautiful and also very interesting. You won’t be bored at all!
Oh I am sorry, the translation of “La Cueva del Chango” is “the monkey cave”.
